Some pieces have the ability to transform the atmosphere of an entire room. Bulu is one of them. Standing an impressive 180 cm tall, this extraordinary pendant lampshade from Indonesia brings together thousands of tiny natural seashells in a beautifully layered silhouette. It captures the spirit of traditional island craftsmanship while feeling entirely at home in a thoughtfully designed contemporary interior.
Its shape unfolds from top to bottom. A narrow neck gradually widens into a series of sculptural tiers, each defined by darker natural bands. Below, a generous rounded section is covered with intricately arranged strands of shells, creating a rich, almost woven surface. The composition then opens into long cascading garlands, falling to different lengths and giving the entire piece a remarkable sense of lightness and movement.
A closer look reveals the extraordinary amount of detail involved. Every strand is made up of small shells, each with its own shape, markings and subtle variations in colour. Soft milky whites, warm creams and delicate sandy tones come together to create a naturally layered palette. From a distance, the surface appears almost continuous, while up close its intricate openwork construction becomes beautifully apparent.
With its generous proportions, Bulu deserves a setting where its full silhouette can be appreciated. It would make a striking centrepiece in a high-ceilinged living room, above a large dining table, in an entrance hall or within the welcoming atmosphere of a boutique hotel. Its natural textures pair effortlessly with plaster walls, timber, stone, linen and understated contemporary furniture, bringing warmth and personality to spacious interiors.
What makes Bulu so special is the individuality of its natural materials and the care expressed through its intricate construction. Impressive in scale yet delicate in every detail, it offers a distinctive connection to Indonesian craftsmanship and the relaxed beauty of island living.
